It depends on the day. I use Maths to figure out patterns in cancer patients that are linked to whether a patient is going to respond to treatment. I need to be able to programme too!
I am not a mathematician though I do use maths in my everyday professional life; “real” mathematicians tend to split between theoretical discoveries, and what is called applied maths, where mathematical principles are applied to real world issues. Both branches of maths are essential and symbiotic, as if there were no theoretical mathematicians, the applied mathematicians would have no principles to apply.
